Men’s Counselling

Counselling for Men in London and Essex

I specialise in counselling for men, currently offering face-to-face and online sessions.

We lose too many men to suicide each year, believing they would be better off dead. The fear, shame, embarrassment, and expectations placed on men prevent them from seeking counselling, or any support for their well-being and mental health.

In 2022 three quarters of suicides registered were men.  4179 deaths: 74.1%, equivalent to 16.4 deaths per 100,000.

Suicides recorded were highest in men aged 90 or over, then followed by men aged 45-49.

Challenges Men Face in Seeking Support

Why Men Don’t Reach Out

Research has shown men are less likely to reach out for support with their physical and mental health, suggesting men feel they cannot speak to a stranger, let alone someone they know.

Societal expectations deem men “should” be tough and suppress their emotions, needs, and wants.

Men’s mental health still has so much stigma surrounding it. It is gaining more attention and awareness, however, it remains a massive issue.

Cultural and Social Pressures

Traditionally, men are expected to be strong, stoic, the man of the house, not displaying any vulnerability or emotional expression, needless to say, discouraged from seeking help and support.

Men are often expected to suppress their emotions at the risk of their mental health declining. It is deemed by society as weak and told to “manup”.

The Consequences of Silence

With this stigma attached, men are reluctant to seek out professional help, resulting in unhealthy coping mechanisms, addictions, self-harm and the worst being suicide. Men are discouraged from engaging in counselling for fear of being perceived as weak.

Young men are taught that certain parts of their personalities are unacceptable, such as expressing an array of feelings, crying, or being vulnerable.

Societal perceptions lead to shame, fear, silence, and isolation. Outdated beliefs and views of how a man “should be” are incredibly harmful and this needs to change.

I specialise in helping men find their voice, deep dive into who they are, express their emotions, and be heard without judgment. Encouraging men to show up for themselves and understand all parts of who they are.

Frequently asked questions

What is counselling?

Counselling is a safe space for you to explore you as a whole, including your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, helping you to understand certain aspects of you and significant others in your life, the main focus being on you. Working through your fears, anxieties, grief.

How long is a session?

Each session is 50 minutes (Therapeutic hour).

How often will we have a session?

Ideally weekly on the same day/time. This is in order for the therapeutic relationship to establish and you to begin to trust your therapist. Also, to gain the most from sessions, feeling comfortable to express and explore how you are feeling.

How many sessions will I need?

We offer short- and long-term sessions, depending on what you are hoping to gain. You can speak with your therapist in the first session about your needs and requirements. There are no fixed number of sessions, you are in control and can end whenever you feel appropriate. We would request notice prior to ending so we can end the therapeutic relationship accordingly.

Will everything I say remain confidential?

It will as long as it is safe to do so, we have a legal and ethical obligation to break confidentiality if we feel you are of harm to yourself or others, particularly children or vulnerable adults. As well as any serious criminal activity, such as an act of terrorism. Child protection or money laundering.

Can I contact you between sessions?

Of course, if you need to change an appointment day/time. If you feel you are in need of urgent help, then please call 999 or contact Samaritans on 116 123 if you need to speak to someone in-between sessions.
