What is Burnout

Signs you are heading towards burnout

Burnout occurs over some time when we experience stress, severe physical and emotional exhaustion, the inability to cope with daily tasks and activities, and leading to a decline in our mental health.  It can be a slow progression initially and suddenly,  you are aware something is not quite right.  it ultimately will lead to a lack of motivation and loss of interest in things you would previously enjoy.

It may leave you feeling hopeless, helpless, withdrawn, depressed, anxious, and far worse if the warning signs are not recognised or ignored.

Some signs to look out for are:

  • sleep disturbance
  • exhaustion
  • decreased motivation
  • significant change in your mood
  • frustration
  • sensitive
  • irritable
  • weakened immunity – frequently becoming poorly
  • turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms

Burnout is not solely caused by being overworked or taking on too much, other factors may be:

  • Eating unhealthy food
  • Irregular sleeping patterns
  • Self-care is not a priority
  • Lack of physical exercise
  • previous or existing mental health issues

If you feel you may be heading towards burnout, please take some time to reflect and notice what is going on for you, enriching your life with the things which make you feel good.

Some ways you can do this:

  • connect with others and share what is going on for you
  • slow down
  • incorporate some of the things you enjoy back into your routine
  • avoid negative or toxic individuals
  • seek professional help if needed
  • acknowledge you are struggling
  • set boundaries
  • take a social media detox
  • maintain a regular sleep pattern
  • adding mindfulness practices
  • journal your thoughts
  • make yourself a priority
  • eat a healthy balanced diet

Recognising the signs is vital, if none of the above helps with how you are feeling, you may need to seek professional help.
